Lusaka City Council Officials Complete Peace Educator Training for Women’s Rights Initiative

On December 13, the Peace Educator Training (PET) program organized by HWPL Zambia Branch successfully concluded in Lusaka, Zambia. The program was conducted for officials of the Lusaka City Council (LCC) with the goal of strengthening the peace-building capacity of public servants, who work directly in communities, through education and administration.
As a six-session online program held on every Saturday from November 8 to December 13, the training brought together 13 staff members from the LCC Public Health Department, members of the Lusaka City Council Junior Council, and participants from other countries engaged in peace education initiatives.
HWPL designed the PET program to help LCC officials integrate peace education into the hygiene and health education they already deliver in schools and local communities. This approach was aimed at connecting the values of peace, public health, human rights, and the rule of law within a single framework, identifying practical solutions to address social challenges. The program, in alignment with HWPL’s women’s rights campaign, Sign for Her, highlighted the importance of protecting the rights of women and girls, expanding educational opportunities, and raising legal awareness.

The curriculum guided participants through themes of diversity, cooperation, and peaceful coexistence, while exploring the root causes of conflict and constructive paths toward peaceful resolution. It also enabled the participants to understand fully and practice in their daily life the value of gratitude, consideration, and forgiveness, as well as respect for cultural heritage, the role of law, and personal responsibility.
All participants who completed the program received official HWPL Peace Educator certification, and they aim to apply the training in their respective fields.
Ryan Walusiku, a Junior Councillor from Lusaka City Council, shared, “I realized that for peaceful coexistence, it is essential to connect our values and influence. This training will serve as an important guide as I carry out my roles and responsibilities in the community.”
Andy Vermaut, Founder of the Fundamental Rights Movement Postversa, also noted that the education centered on diversity and harmony was particularly impactful, motivating him to reflect on the true value of cooperation.
An official from the HWPL Peace Education Department stated that HWPL will continue supporting Lusaka public officials as they grow into leaders who promote peace education in schools and communities, adding that follow-up programs will be strengthened to ensure that peace, human rights, and legal education take root at the grassroots level.
