IPYG New Zealand Shares Community Values Through Sports Under the Theme ‘Weaving People Together’

On April 18, IPYG New Zealand hosted the ‘Youth Peace Sports Day’ at the Synergy Sports Centre in New Lynn, Auckland. The event was organized to practice IPYG New Zealand’s 2026 theme, “Whiria Te Tangata” (Weaving People Together), providing a meaningful platform for youth from diverse cultural backgrounds to unite in peace.
Jemma Palmer, a youth advisor from Tuia Waitakere, delivered a congratulatory speech emphasizing the importance of having the “courage” to take the first step toward others. “You will find that stepping out of your comfort zone is not as uncomfortable as you might think,” Palmer said, encouraging active interaction among the participants.

Commemorative Remarks and Icebreaking Activities
The main event kicked off with icebreaking activities led by the youth organization ‘Mixit,’ followed by futsal and volleyball matches. Moving beyond mere competition, all matches focused on practicing teamwork, mutual respect, and inclusivity, allowing participants to experience a true sense of community.
“I had a wonderful time playing sports and teaming up with new people,” said a youth leader from Mixit who participated in the games.

This event was a testament to the power of local collaboration. Empower Youth New Zealand, Mixit, Tuia Waitakere, and Refugees as Survivors New Zealand (RASNZ) supported the planning and operation, while the SportsHub Community Trust and the Synergy Sports Centre provided the necessary equipment. Local sponsors, including Baker’s Delight New Lynn and Fair Food New Zealand, also contributed to the peace initiative by providing refreshments.
“Sports serve as a practical tool for peace, allowing youth to interact without prejudice,” said IPYG New Zealand. The group expressed its commitment to continuing activities that ‘weave people together’ and building a sustainable peace network with youth worldwide.
